Great Yarmouth Restaurants

Great Yarmouth has always been known, and quite rightly too, for its fantastic array of fish and chip shops. From the famous stands selling 'Chips on the Market' to the stylish seafront fish and chip restaurants like Fish & Grill and HMS Hinchinbrook, you will not be disappointed if you come to town in search of a nice piece of cod in crispy batter and some lovely hot chips doused in salt, vinegar and whatever other condiments get your taste buds going.

But there is much more to the Great Yarmouth restaurant scene than just fish and chips. The town has a vast array of cuisines on offer, including Italian, Chinese, Indian, Vietnamese, Thai, Greek and Portuguese restaurants. Take Regent Road, for example! That's the main road leading down from the town centre to the seafront and it's a place where you can take your pick from hot dogs, burgers, kebabs, tapas, traditional English dishes, Chinese food and Indian food. Oh, and you can also get an ice cream and a stick of Great Yarmouth rock, as well as freshly made doughnuts straight from the fryer.
Great Yarmouth 2019 Holidays

Great Yarmouth always feels a little bit cold and quiet during the Winter months. Many of the amusement arcades are boarded up and closed, and the seafront ice cream stands are either permanently shut or only open at weekends - and so there's always a real sense of a big reawakening when the half-term holidays come along and signal the start of the 2019 Great Yarmouth holiday season.

And you can see and feel the difference all along Marine Parade. Earlier this week I spotted the owners of Flavours ice cream stall giving it an annual makeover in readiness for the new season, while the Beach Terrace Tea Rooms - a personal favourite of mine - was already spruced up and open for business. And everywhere, as I walked along the Prom, I saw restaurants getting a new lick of paint and a general sense of excitement about the welcome return of the holidaymakers.

Holidays in Great Yarmouth

And it should be a good year for Great Yarmouth in 2019. Not only are we expecting to see the return of the hugely popular Wednesday night seafront fireworks displays, but we are also hoping to see the completion of the revamp of the beautiful Victorian Waterways. And with European holidays getting more and more expensive, thanks to good, old Brexit and the collapse of the pound, bumper crowds are predicted here on the Norfolk Coast.

And the seafront is certainly getting prepared for it. Like I said, all the restaurants, arcades and major attractions are getting tidied up, polished up, repainted and revamped in readiness for a spring and summer of proper seaside fun. And once the weather improves just a fraction, and the sun starts properly shining up above, then I don't think there's any place I'd rather be than strolling along Great Yarmouth seafront. And preferably with a whippy ice cream in my hand!James Gullhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/04613645544095657671noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4199713994259614165.post-53138110658094515092018-09-03T01:52:00.001-07:002019-02-06T05:26:45.980-08:00With the Great Yarmouth summer season winding down, it's time for the September festival seasonTwo big weekends coming up in Great Yarmouth this September as the Maritime Festival and the Out There Festival bring the town to life...
Great Yarmouth Maritime Festival

It's been a fabulous summer season here in Great Yarmouth - what with the soaring success of the first Great Yarmouth Air Show and the ever popular Wednesday night free Fireworks Displays. And the fun shows no signs of slowing down as we head into what will be a very busy September, in which two of the town's most popular annual events will be taking place. First up, on Saturday the 8th and Sunday the 9th, there will be the Great Yarmouth Maritime Festival. This entertaining and informative gala takes place on the quayside and is a chance for locals and holidaymakers to get an insight into Yarmouth's rich maritime heritage. There are shanties being sung, fresh herring being cooked and numerous stalls and maritime-themed displays, as well as a chance to climb aboard and look around some truly remarkable sea-going vessels, including the Lydia Eva, a World War Two minesweeper and the world's largest motor-powered trimaran, the Triton.

Great Yarmouth Out There Festival

And following hot on the heels of the Maritime Festival comes the riot of colour and life that is the circus-themed Out There Festival. As home to the legendary Hippodrome Circus, Great Yarmouth is clearly the perfect location for a fun, vibrant three-day event that mixes jugglers, edge-of-your-seat acrobatics, exploding kitchens, rambling explorers and time travelling disco divas. Most of the action takes place at the normally quiet St. George's Park, but from 14th to the 16th of September please don't go to the park looking for anything approaching peace and quiet. There'll be music, colour, weird things hanging from the trees - and a feast for the eyes wherever you look.

And don't forget to pop down to the seafront while these events are on! Great Yarmouth is still very much open for holiday business during the busy month of September, so you can still get your fix of amusement arcades, ice creams, fish and chips, fairground rides and crazy golf. And this year, it's looking like it might even still be warm enough for a dip in the sea this September. So, don't forget to pack your bikini and a bucket and spade for the kids...Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4199713994259614165.post-84146262880767133522018-08-09T10:49:00.000-07:002018-08-09T10:49:27.452-07:00Come and play on the fruit machines and amusement arcade games that brighten up Great Yarmouth's Golden MileWhether you're into Pinball, Pacman, Tuppeny Nudgers or Penny Pushers, you'll find them all in the mini Las Vegas that is Great Yarmouth seafront...
If you don't live by the seaside then you might be in for a surprise when you realise just how many amusement arcades there are on Great Yarmouth seafront. From Circus Circus to Caesar's Palace, and from Leisureland to the Golden Nugget, the whole place is alive with the sound of coins rattling into win trays and ablaze with the glow of the neon signage and the twinkling lights of the slot machines. By day and by night, these venues teem with happy punters who play shoot 'em up games, test their strength on the punchbags, try to win cuddly toys on the grabbing machines or even play for big stakes on the 'High Roller' fruit machines.

Seaside Amusement Arcades

You will be spoilt for choice as you wander along Great Yarmouth's Golden Mile and try to pick a place in which to spend your pennies. As well as the arcades on the main strip, there are also amusement arcades on both piers and at Great Yarmouth Pleasure Beach, as well as an old-fashioned arcade at Merrivale Model Village packed with retro machines and vintage one-armed bandits. Some of the arcades even offer something a little different, like the laser gun game Quasar at the Mint. So if a chance to shoot all your mates with a laser gun sounds fun to you, then why not make a group booking there and fire at them to your heart's content.

Other amusement arcades offer traditional favourite pastimes, like pool and skittles, while many now run a scheme where you can win tokens on the games and slot machines, then exchange them for kids toys, kitchen items, novelty products and all manner of fancy goods. But whether you're playing to win cash, to earn tokens for prizes or just to have a laugh with your mates, you'll certainly not be short of places to play on Great Yarmouth seafront.
Holidays in Great Yarmouth

With its famous beach and seafront getting the bulk of the attention whenever Great Yarmouth hits the news, it's easy to forget that Norfolk's favourite seaside resort is located among the Norfolk Broads. But take the River Bure down from Acle - a long, meandering stretch through endless green fields - and you'll suddenly find yourself in the heart of Great Yarmouth. And there you can moor at the quiet riverside, then take the short walk through the town centre for an afternoon on the seafront and beach.

Great Yarmouth Quay

Then when you're ready to continue your sailing venture, you can head out through Breydon Water - a local nature reserve home to vast numbers of migratory birds - and wend your way down to the cafes and holiday parks at Burgh Castle. From there, you can sail up the River Yare - the river from which Great Yarmouth takes its name - and eventually you will end up in Norwich. (Although it's not the quickest of journeys, by any means).

Of course, if you want a lazy, quiet holiday on the Norfolk Broads, then Great Yarmouth might not be the ideal stopping place for you. But if you get a little bit bored of all those sleepy, inbred Norfolk villages and fancy spending an hour or even an evening in a place with electricity, colour and life, then this vibrant seaside town is without question the liveliest place to moor on the rivers of Norfolk. Why? Because Great Yarmouth FC, or the Bloaters as they are nicknamed, play their home games at the Wellesley Recreation Ground, whose main stand is said to be the oldest football stand still in regular use. Fans have been supporting their local team on those terraces since as long ago as 1892 and the stand even now has Grade II listed building status.
So if you like the thought of dressing to impress while having a gamble on the gee-gees, then click through to the Great Yarmouth Racecourse calendar and see what's coming up.

And it's not just about football and racing in Great Yarmouth, as the town also plays home to stock car and greyhound racing, crown green bowls and an 18-hole Pitch & Putt golf course, plus it also has a large sports centre right in the centre of the seafront. Named the Marina Centre, the venue provides indoor swimming, indoor bowls, a gym and spaces suited to 5-aside football and badminton. So, there's no really no excuse not to get a little exercise while you're here on hols - and to work off all those ice creams, doughnuts and chips!Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4199713994259614165.post-22234100011452246772018-08-04T04:36:00.001-07:002018-08-04T04:36:40.094-07:00Looking for fun and different things to do on a Saturday night in Great Yarmouth this summer?Whether it's a trip to the circus, an end-of-the-pier show or just a few swift pints and a disco dance, there's no shortage of Saturday night entertainment in Great Yarmouth this summer...

It's the biggest night of the week and often the last night of a week-long holiday, so of course you want to end your stay in Great Yarmouth with something of a bang. And during the summer season, there are lots of ways to spend Saturday night here, whether you're a family, an older couple or a Stag or Hen Party in search of a good time. Perhaps, the number one option for family-friendly Saturday night fun would be a night at the Hippodrome Circus. You can treat the kids to an amazing show full of high-wire stunts and some eye-popping juggling at what is Britain's only remaining permanent circus building. The show there starts at 7.30pm.
Live entertainment of a different kind can be found at the theatre on Britannia Pier. The venue plays host to a number of top comics during the summer months, including Jimmy Carr, Jim Davidson, Sarah Millican and Roy 'Chubby' Brown.. Or if cinema is more your thing, then head to the Hollywood Cinema just over the road from Britannia Pier. Here, you can see all the latest movies with a giant coke to quench your thirst and a big bowl of popcorn in your lap.

But that's only if you haven't already had a meal at one of the seafront''s many popular restaurants - either a curry at Planet Papadum, fish and chips at HMS Hinchinbrook or Fish & Grill, or perhaps a steak at the Charcoal Grill. There are numerous other dining choices, too - and it's the same when it comes to pubs and bars, but if it's disco or live entertainment you're after, then the Marine Pub is usually the liveliest of the lot. Or for a quieter and more relaxed kind of vibe, why not take advantage of the outside tables at the bar at the Wellington Bowl? The Wellington Bowl is Great Yarmouth's 10-Pin Bowling venue - and is situated on Wellington Pier - but you can just pop in for a drink, then sit at one of the many tables outside and watch the moon rising over Great Yarmouth beach, as night-time slowly falls...Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4199713994259614165.post-80962599237840436982018-08-03T03:00:00.002-07:002018-08-03T03:46:30.102-07:00Is Great Yarmouth home to the world's best 'so bad he's good' busker?A trip to Great Yarmouth just wouldn't be complete without seeing the famous Puppet Man in full flow...
Things to see in Great Yarmouth

If you're coming to Great Yarmouth for your holiday this summer, then there are lots of things to see and do. You might want to take a boat out to sea to see the seals at Scroby Sands, for instance, or visit the local racecourse to bet on the horses. But whatever you do, you mustn't miss out on Great Yarmouth's famous busking legend, the Puppet Man? And why is he so famous? Well, it must be because his act is so bad that it's almost good.

Great Yarmouth Puppet Man

If you haven't ever been lucky enough to see the Great Yarmouth Puppet Man in action, then it's not the easiest thing to picture in your head. But try to imagine a short elderly gent in an over-sized suit standing next to a 1980s stereo player, which he feeds with cassette tapes - remember them? - before waggling a puppet in time with the music. Actually, 'in time' wouldn't be a true reflection of the Puppet Man's comic genius, because regardless of the tune or rhythm that's blaring out of his beatbox, his puppet-waving has a life of its own. It's not so much a case that the puppet dances along to the music. It's just being shaken around in a rather odd way. And it tends to look really rather sorry for itself.

But even though the puppet might not be enjoying the act, there's no doubt that the Puppet Man is! If you get close enough, you might even get to hear him singing out of tune (and out of time) with all his favourite songs - but that's when he's not too busy posing for selfies with tourists or playing up to the camera phones forever filming his antics. Many of these have been uploaded to the Internet, enhancing his status as a truly original, if rather offbeat, busker. But why go to YouTube when you can watch him for real? He's a must-see local attraction if you're holidaying here.

TOP TIP: The Great Yarmouth Puppet Man normally pitches up outside McDonalds on Regent Road. That's when he's not on tour in Norwich.Kelly Jameshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/01479604786347298802noreply@blogger.com0
